The Pilates method of exercising has become one of the most sought after ways of maintaining one's fitness. Unique in its approach to working the body 'smart', not 'hard', it is renowned for achieving long-term physical benefits. The Pilates method works to strengthen the center, lengthen the spine, build muscle tone and increase body awareness, posture and flexibility. Pilates exercises, as a whole, develop strong abdominals, back, butt and deep postural muscles. It focuses on the muscles that support the skeletal system and act as the powerhouse of the body. These muscles are the main stabilizing muscles of the torso and are very important for preventing injury to the back. Working from the center of the body when doing any movement, takes the load off of the joints and the spine, helping your body work more efficiently.

Originally developed by German born Joseph Pilates in the early 1900s, the technique has evolved, taking on various forms. Many dancers, athletes and actresses have been attracted to his methods as a way to maintain a strong, supple, and streamlined physique.
